Joanne Sher: Editor/Proofreader : Desolations

Here's this week's verse:

Come and see what the LORD has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. Psalm 46:8

This isn't something I generally strive to do. When I look to see "what the LORD has done," I'll tend to check out the beauty of a rainbow, the remarkable colors of a sunset, the amazing "mechanics" of the human body, or the unspoiled beauty of a rainforest. But here, we're told to look at the "desolations" He has brought on the earth. Why look at those?

Because He created them too. From hurricanes to earthquakes to tornadoes, the Lord is in charge of all of it. And He is in control. "Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea (just a few verses earlier - verse 2 of that very same psalm)."

As Irene continues to make her way up the coast, we can watch, perhaps, with different eyes. It can lead to desolation and destruction, and in fact has. But He is in it. And we need not fear.

Perfect word for today! I am always in awe when I watch a video of a tornado (or see one with my own eyes), a raging storm, or even simply high winds. He's amazing. Truly.

And there's more--God's desolations are more than weather phenomena. He orchestrates the appropriate ruin of wrong relationships, of sinful circumstances, and of idolatrous associations. Thank you, Lord, for correction!
