Goals Begone! Well...

I like having  a plan - for my day, my week, my month, my year. If you've been following my blog for any amount of time, you probably know that setting goals is something I do fairly regularly. For example, I've been posting monthly goals and reporting my progress on them almost without fail since October of 2008. (and I started this blog in June of that year).

Yep - that's FIVE years.
But that's not it. I've also been setting annual goals here since the beginning of 2009. (here's a link to my first one way back then) And I belong to two different accountability yahoo groups where I post weekly goals - one for several years, and the other for about one year. AND, more often than not, I send an email to a VERY dear friend with my daily goals.
She knows EVERYTHING I do, and plan to do. :)

And, finally, I'm beginning to wonder if it's getting a bit obsessive (especially since, for the last several month, maybe longer, I haven't been so good at meeting those goals).

Don't get me wrong. Goals are good to have. For someone with my personality especially, knowing where you wanna be later is key to actually arriving there some time near when you want. But if you are too rigid in your goal-setting or goal-focusing, you can ignore God's voice in your moments. And that is NEVER a good idea.

So, I'm going to slacken off a bit on my goal-setting. And I'm starting with the easiest (for me, anyway) - the monthly ones. Before this post goes live, I will have deleted my goals list on my sidebar, and I won't be doing a goals/progress post monthly as I have been for four years - at least until further notice. Not sure I'm ready to give up the weekly goals (and the daily email has saved me MANY a time from forgetting what I have to do on a particular day), but the monthly thing is a start.

So, I guess we'll see how this goes.

Do you set goals for yourself regularly?

  1. I do. Not always huge ones, but I set them. I've found with my writing there always comes a time where I HAVE to set a goal. Right now it's 10,000 words a week. The last two weeks I've hit it. Um...it's Friday now;) This was our first week back to homeschooling, but I WILL make it!

    1. You go, girl!! That determination WILL work for ya. First week back to school of ANY kind is always wacky (and have I got a story for THAT this week! LOL).

  2. Well, you KNOW my goal setting failures--LOL. But I do find that the weekly goals we share helps get me motivated--except when I'm feeling overwhelmed and then goals go out the window. :) But I'm not ready to give up the weekly goals, either--even though I miss several/year. Being somewhat lazy, I need them!

    1. The weekly ones keep me motivated too (as you likely know LOL) - I'm not crazy about reporting in with those "no"s. It would help, I suppose, if I actually LOOKED at them more often than once a week ;)

  3. I usually don't. I do have an agenda of things to do each day, but with my job, things can change so fast, so I must remain flexible. Some days, nothing on my agenda was completed. Other days, everything and more was checked off.

    1. If you're okay with that (it would drive me BANANAS, I think LOL), then you've definitely got a good job for your personality, dear Barb!

  4. I bounce back and forth on my writing goals, but I always do better when I have one. I'm much more productive with them than without!

  5. I'm a goal setter too, but I also realize the importance of not having my schedule so full that I miss those God moments.

  6. I'm a huge goal setter. My husband often tells me that if I had a destination in mind then I would walk to get there until my feet fell off. And yes, sometimes MY goal can detract from what I really should be focused on.

    1. Ah - my goal twin ;). Praying for BOTH of us to both achieve the goals God wants us to achieve, AND to hear God when He's trying to send us in another direction.

  7. Jo, I am so proud of you!! Wow.

That being said (and very VERY true), I'm with you. I need those weekly goals we lay out (most) weekends. They've helped me tremendously. But like Dee, when I get overwhelmed, the goals go out the window. I love that with the help of the group I'm brought back and get back to work shortly after the crisis time. But the goals are goals, not a straight jacket. ;-)

So proud of you, girl. =]

    1. Thanks, sweet Peejers. For the encouragement. For the straight-jacket reminder (and not just in this comment LOL). For being my "to-do list" recepticle. For giving me balance in more ways than one. For EVERYTHING!

  8. Oh, I understand this completely and you're right. We can make plans but doesn't God have a better one? And we DO need to be flexible and open to His nudges. I, too, believe in goals and I do set them, but I'm open to His leading, too. Way to go!

    1. Thanks, Karla! Listening for His nudge is DEFINITELY a struggle with me - but I'm getting better, with God's help. Thanks for stopping by, and for the encouragement!

  9. Hi Joanne. I'm totally opposite. I don't set goals. I NEED to!!! When you don't have any goals, then life can become really cluttered. I have goals in my mind, but they are not written down. I keep saying, I'm gonna do better.
