Munchkins

As a child (and even now!), one of my very favorite movies was The Wizard of Oz. Now, I have heard of folks who were petrified of the flying monkeys, or some other scene in it, and refuse to watch it (or allow their children to). But, well, folks - that's not me.

I watched it every year when it came on TV (you know - in the olden days before TiVo and even VCRs - gasp!!). I could sing just about every song by heart (I'm sure I had the record, or cassette tape, or something). And even though I knew exactly what was coming just about every minute of this classic film, I was dazzled by it each time I watched it. Along with The Sound of Music (which very well may be another post in the future!), this was "must-see-TV" (I'm dating myself, aren't I?).

I loved The Wizard of Oz so much, in fact, that despite the fact that I was one of the tallest kids in my class from the day I was old enough to be IN a class (up to now - I am 5'10", after all!), I developed the nickname "Munchy" - short for Munchkin (loved those little dudes and dudettes!). It was mostly only family who used it - and one dear family friend. Whenever I see the movie, think about it, or get one of the song stuck in my head (like right now), I think of Stacee Ullman - who I haven't seen in decades. (May have to do a Facebook search - haven't in a bit)

Of course, I now own this movie (and my other favorite of course! :D), so I can watch it any time I want. And even if I don't have time, the songs never fail to run through my head (at the most opportune OR inopportune times!)
What movies can you never watch enough?

  3. Joanne, nice post. I've watched Ben Hur 50 times. My favorite scene is not the race scene, but the intense death scene with Messala. It's the perfect portrayal of a hate-filled person who remains evil to his last hissing, death rattled breath. Frightening. I also like most versions of Jane Eyre. I love to watch Midnight in Paris because of the dialogue and the music.

  4. Ohhh goodness! I LOVED watching The Wizard of Oz, too! On TV! I do need to get it on DVD though. I loved the munchkins! But my most favorite character from that movie is the Scarecrow. "But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking." I also love his song, too. I'm sure I'll be singing that today now. ♪♫ I would not be just a nuffin'...my head all full of stuffin'...my heart all full of pain...♫♪♫...I would dance and be merry, I could be a ding-a-derry, if I only had a brain! ♪♫

    1. Love the scarecrow too - not a character in that movie I DON'T like! And I love that even when the songs get stuck in your head, they don't annoy you - cuz they're NOT ANNOYING LOL.

      Thanks for stopping by, Shelley!

  5. Hmmm...we're not big movie watchers, but I enjoyed Romancing the Stone and the Indiana Jones movies a few times. But, we have watched a few movies with our kids, over and over. Home Alone. Harry and the Hendersons. The Mutant Turtles. Glad those turtle days are over. lol

  6. The Wizard of Oz in my favorite movie! There's the Broadway show going on now and I'd LOVE to go see it! I also love "Airplane!" Even though it is a bit off color in places, I laugh just thinking about it.

  7. I'm not sure if I've ever watched an entire Wizard of Oz. My kids didn't watch it because when they were small we didn't allow TV. I didn't watch it as a kid because we didn't have a TV for a long time and when we got one it was a 12 inch black and white. As for what my favorite movie is, I think it's probably Yentl or Fried Green Tomatoes.
