“The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter. ’tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.” Mark Twain

Motivation and Inspiration

Both of the above, it seems, have been lacking in me over the past little bit writing-wise (at least as they relate to the projects I really need to be working on). It is, in a word, frustrating.

I'm guessing I'm not the only one out there who is unmotivated - whether it's about writing or something else. So, to that end, I'm planning to share some encouragement right here in this post, in the hopes that it will bring motivation AND inspiration to anyone who needs it - myself included. And if YOU have anything to add, please share it in the comments!

Let's start with a bit of Scripture - shall we?

I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10

And how about a quote or two?

When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on. ~Franklin D. Roosevelt

Putting off an easy thing makes it hard. Putting off a hard thing makes it impossible. ~George Claude Lorimer

If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. ~Toni Morrison

I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.' - Muhammad Ali

"A writer is a writer not because she writes well and easily, because she has amazing talent, because everything she does is golden. In my view a writer is a writer because even when there is no hope, even when nothing you do shows any sign of promise, you keep writing anyway." Junot Diaz

Scripture Stories: Timeless Truths

  1. Thank you for sharing that you, a winning writer, sometimes suffer from non-motivation too. I have stopped working on my goals and that is unforgivable in my book. Maybe I just lack motivation and will get back on course. Inspiration . . . maybe that's just what I need. I have many favorite scriptures. Philippians 4 has to be all time fav though.

    1. LOVE Philippians 4. EVERY verse :). Philippians is the first book I studied after getting saved, so it has a dear place in my heart.

Praying for motivation AND inspiration for ya :)

“And this mess is so big
And so deep and so tall,
    We cannot pick it up.
There is no way at all!”
    Dr. Seuss

Nothing is particularly difficult if you divide it into small jobs.
Ford (creator of the assembly line)

    Love ya,

    1. Oooh - love both of those (the Dr. Seuss quote is one of my absolute favorites from his books).

Thanks, sweetie - see you VERY soon! :) :)

  3. "You can do anything for 15 minutes." the Flylady - I find that if I will commit to that much when I'm blah, either motivation kicks in or at least I'm 15 minutes ahead than if I hadn't tried. Thanks for this post!

  4. Not sure where this originally came from as I heard it from my husband:
How do you eat an elephant ear sandwich? One bite at a time!

But it lines up with the Ford quote and Flylady, whom I admire.
Breaking things into smaller pieces, talking yourself into doing things
for 15 minutes to start--these are all good ways to get going.

Thank you for the scripture and your insight, Joanne. I've been
falling short of my writing goals lately.

    1. You're very welcome, Kathy! Praying for both of us! Need to do that fifteen minute thing, I think. One bite at a time :)

    Hi Joanne,
I like Galations 6:9 (NIV) Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
